 Teco Pottery Marks

William D. Gates (1854 -   ) was born in Ashland, Ohio and in 1881, he started the Terra Cotta Tile Works in Terra Cotta, Illinois making bricks, drain tile, and pottery. He experimented with art pottery and in 1902 he started the Teco line usually offered in for sale ads under “The Gates Pottery” rather than Teco. Most of the forms were created and designed by Gates himself, but also artists, sculptors, and architects including at least one by Frank Lloyd Wright. Many glaze colors were used. However, the distinctive green glaze that was the current rage, remains the most popular.
