William J Walley branch handle vase
William J Walley branch handle vase
William J Walley Pottery branch handle leaf decorated vase. Covered in a beautiful matte green over red brown flambe glaze. It measures 10 3/4 inches tall and 4 3/8 inches in diameter. It is in great condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or firing flaws, just the stilt pulls touch the foot edge. Die-stamped WJW. Walley vases with carved and tooled decoration are rare. He used a wide variety of glazes, more than the Grueby or Merrimac Potteries to whom his work is often compared. The pottery was located in West Sterling Massachusetts where he began in 1898, making everything by hand. He died in 1919. An unusual piece of New England Arts & Crafts era art pottery.
